Students and teacher enjoy their time togetherWestgate Christian Academy believes in the value of mixed-age groupings that allow children to progress at their own pace, learn from each other and independently explore new concepts.

Similar to the Montessori educational philosophy, there are three stages of learning at Westgate Christian Academy:  Foundation, Primary, and Intermediate.  In addition, there are proficiency levels within these stages.  Placement in a stage is based on reading proficiency and maturity, complemented with  math skills, rather than merely chronological age.  Accordingly, children in each stage of learning are responsible for learning tasks commensurate with their development level.  History, science, geography, Spanish, Art, Music, and Bible are taught to all children.


Foundation Stage - age entering 3 through 6


Levels: Pre-Elementary and Early Elementary

Pre-Elementary Overview:
This level establishes academic readiness and helps nurture the child's sense of maturity for learning.  Children in the first year of Pre-elementary gain in maturity and responsibility for their own learning process.  Children in the second year develop the academic skills needed for reading and math in the early elementary class.  This includes phonetic awareness and a sense of numbers.

WCA's academic preschool prepares children for the more formal learning they will experience as they grow. More than just a playgroup, WCA's program helps children develop social and reading-readiness skills. Emphasis is placed on meeting a child's individual needs and nurturing development. WCA's preschoolers participate in school events, such as field trips and drama productions. They study Spanish through games and music. There are two classes, each limited to eight children. Parents may choose half days in either the morning (8:30-11:30 am), a full-day program (8:30-3:00) or extended mornings to 12:30 p.m. two to five days per week.

Early Elementary Overview:
Children in Year One of Early Elementary refine their understanding of the alphabet, phonetic sounds and blending of letters into words.  Children in Year Two learn to read with the competency of the Dr. Seuss Beginning-To-Read books.  In Math, Year One children develop their number sense to the numeral twenty and beyond.  Year Two children understand place value and foundational addition and subtraction.

Studies include literature, math, spelling, history, geography, science, penmanship, grammar, art, music, Spanish, and physical education. These studies are done within an integrated curriculum through theme unit study. Latin supplements the older students' learning.

Primary Stage:  age entering 6 through 9


Levels: Lower Elementary and Middle Elementary

Lower Elementary (Grades 1 and 2)

Children in this level become proficient and confident readers after a thorough phonics review and then are able to read chapter books comfortably.  Math includes advanced addition and subtraction and beginning multiplication.

This program is tailored to children with a solid phonetic foundation in reading. It provides further practice from the Open Court Young Scholars series to help your child gain full reading proficiency. Math is taught using hands-on materials for conceptual development and a Saxon math book for practice. The maximum limit for these classes is sixteen students.

Middle Elementary (Grades 3 and 4)

Children in this level, as proficient readers, use primary sources and classics for much of their literature and history.  They will also learn to perform advanced multiplication and division and all complementary topics.  Latin is taught to reinforce an understanding of grammar and sentence structure.

This program is for proficient readers who acquire information on their own by reading original sources. Students focus on strengthening their reading and writing skills, critical thinking, and develop their ability to gather information. Latin studies provide a foundation for English. These classes are limited to sixteen students.


Intermediate Stage: Age entering 10 to 14


Levels:  Upper Elementary and Junior High

Children in this level can comfortably read the classics of literature and be challenged to think, write, and synthesize information.  All topics of science and history are taught on a middle school level within the curriculum units.  They continue to develop their proficiency in all the basics of mathematics through algebra.
